1. Moses was to say to Pharaoh, "Thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my first-born." Ex 4:22. God called him out of Egypt, which is applied also to the Lord Jesus. Ho 11:1; Mt 2:15.
2. Because Pharaoh refused to let God's first-born go, all the first-born of Egypt were slain. Ex 12:29.
3. God claimed for Himself all the first-born of the children of Israel, and of their cattle. The first-born of Israel were redeemed by the sons of Levi, as far as they went, and the remainder were redeemed with money. Nu 3:12-51.
4. To the first-born son in a family pertained the birthright. Esau was called a profane person for selling his birthright: it was despising the gift of God. The first-born son was to inherit a double portion of his father's property. De 21:15-17.
5. In the N.T. the term is applied to the Lord: He was Mary's first-born. Mt 1:25. He is also called, in pre-eminence, 'the first-born of every creature,' '/Colossians/1/15/type/am'>Col 1:15; 'the first-born among many brethren,' Ro 8:29; and 'the first-born from the dead.' Col 1:18; Re 1:5. In bringing 'the first-begotten' into the world, God says, "Let all the angels of God worship him." Heb 1:6.
In the O.T. also the title had the force of pre-eminence, irrespective of the time of birth. David, though the youngest, was made the firstborn: of. Ps 89:27. Christ also in every relationship must have the first place, as is manifest in the above passages.

So Moses numbered, as the Lord commanded him, all the firstborn Israelites. But all the firstborn males from a month old and upward as numbered were 22,273 [273 more than the Levites]. And the Lord said to Moses, Take the Levites [for Me] instead of all the firstborn Israelites, and the Levites' cattle instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be Mine. I am the Lord. And for those 273 who are to be redeemed of the firstborn of the Israelites who outnumber the Levites, You shall take five shekels apiece, reckoning by the sanctuary shekel of twenty gerahs; you shall collect them, And you shall give the ransom silver from the excess number [over the Levites] to be redeemed to Aaron and his sons. So Moses took the redemption money from those who were left over from the number who were redeemed by the Levites. From the firstborn of the Israelites he took the money, 1,365 shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary. If a man has two wives, one loved and the other disliked, and they both have borne him children, and if the firstborn son is the son of the one who is disliked, Then on the day when he wills his possessions to his sons, he shall not put the firstborn of his loved wife in place of the [actual] firstborn of the disliked wife -- "her firstborn being older. read more.
